Nowadays Many school children and teenagers are struggling with problems like spinal pain, shoulders stretch and back discomfort at an early age. A major reason for this is heavy school bag. Every day this bag hanging on the shoulders of children has a direct impact on their health, posture and growth.

According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, children often carry 10% to 25% of their body weight as school bags and are alarm bells for the body. Heavy bags can spoil the balance of the spinal cord of children, which also affects their physical development process.

So let’s News of the need Today I will know what should be the right school bag? Will also know that-

  • How much weight is there?
  • How can children be protected from this danger?

Expert: Dr. Hitesh Bhandari, Consultant Orthopedic, Indian Spinal Injies Center (ISIC), New Delhi

Question- How dangerous are heavy school bags for children’s health?

answer- On an average, a school child reads about 8 different topics in a day. This means that children carry at least 8 different books, and do not include notebooks, worksheets and other important things. In such a situation, carrying heavy bags even for 20-25 minutes every day affects the children’s back and often they complain of back pain. This pain is usually more in girls than in boys. Children who especially pick up heavy bags, often go forward and walk forward so that they can balance the weight of the bag. This makes the body’s posture (posture) unusual.

Heavy bags can cause a hornback (bent waist) or a slightly curved texture of the spine, but it does not cause permanent deformity unless the child has any spine problem, such as scoliosis, not. If a child already has spine disease, but parents do not know about it, then raising heavy bags daily can spoil that condition.

Question- What are the signs of having heavy bags?

answer- If the child starts having pain in the back, shoulders or legs, then it may indicate that his bag is very heavy. Apart from this, there are some other signs.

  • Back, neck or shoulder pain
  • Numbness
  • Trouble while walking or inequality
  • Constant restlessness, mild fever or weight phenomenon
  • Stool or urine

If the pain is more or persistent, then see the child to the doctor so that there is no serious problem.

Question- Hanging the bag on a shoulder also affects the pasteur?

answer- The ‘Human Factor: The Journal of the Human Factors and Irgonomics Society’ was held at Richargate. The purpose of this study was to know what effect it affects their body’s posture and spinal cord when children raise heavy bags equal to 10% of their weight. Especially it was seen that when the children hang the bag on the same shoulder, how does the balance of the body deteriorate. The study included 162 school children between the ages of 11 and 13. When the children hung the bag on one shoulder, it was found that the body started bending in the other direction. The balance of both shoulders deteriorated. A shoulder hanged down. By placing a bag on the right shoulder, the spine turned more to the right and putting it on the left shoulder increased. This suggests that even if the weight of the bag is considered safe (10%of the child’s weight), it can affect the spine and body posture if it is hung on the same shoulder.

Question- What effect does heavy school bag affect the mental health of children?

answer- A heavy bag can affect the child’s mental health. This can bring a sense of irritability, restlessness and distance from school to the child. If this goes on for a long time, then the child can stop studying in studies and his health can also be weak.

Question- What do doctors recommend on the effects of children’s heavy bags?

answer- Dr. Hitesh Bhandari says that children should take care of some important things to protect them from heavy bags. Understand it from the graphic below-

Question- Do heavy bags have different effects on young children and teenagers?

answer- Yes, children of both ages affect different ways.

Young children (5–10 years) At this age, bones and muscles are still in the early stages of development. Their bone structure is soft and flexible. In such a situation, the pressure of the heavy bag can show immediate effect such as bent back, quick fatigue, frequent back or shoulder pain. Since their body is not completely strong, young children are at risk of injury or posture disturbances.

Teenagers (11–16 years)

At this age, the growth of bones increases and muscles begin to become strong. The effect of a heavy bag does not appear immediately, but gradually the wrong posture (such as continuous walking, shoulder imbalance) can be formed. If it continues for a long time, the spinal cord can be permanently crooked or back pain can become a chronic (persistent living) problem.

Question- Does the height of the bag and the length of the strap make a difference?

answer- Yes, if the bag hangs very low or strap is loose then the weight of the bag puts more pressure on the back. The right way is that the bags are above the waist and both strap are equal.
