A study published in the Journal of Hepatology in 2020 estimated that about 5% (about 1.2 million) of people infected with Chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) are also affected by the Hepatitis D virus (HDV).
According to the study, about 1 of every 5 cases of liver disease and liver cancer can be related to the co-infection of HDV.

Hepatitis D is a viral infection, which causes liver inflammation and damage. This is caused by hepatitis D virus. This virus is dependent on hepatitis B virus to increase its number, so HDV infection is not possible in the absence of HBV.
The simultaneous infection of HDV and HBV is the most severe form of chronic viral hepatitis. This increases the risk of liver cancer and liver failure manifold.
According to IARC, hepatitis D, compared to hepatitis B, increases the risk of liver cancer by two to six times. When hepatitis B is with B, its mortality rate is up to 20%, which is the highest in all types of hepatitis.
