Down syndrome is a congenital genetic condition, which has an additional chromosome in every cell of the child’s body. Because of this, their physical and mental development is not fully done or delayed.
According to a report by United Nations, one of every 1,000–1,100 baby worldwide is born with Down syndrome. It is estimated that 16 to 54 lakh people in the world suffer from it.
According to government data, about one out of 800–1,000 children in India are born with Down syndrome. That is, about 30,000 children are born with Down syndrome every year.
Given the seriousness of Down syndrome, the United Nations decided to celebrate March 21 as ‘World Down Syndrome Day’ every year in 2012. The main objective of celebrating this day is to raise awareness among people about Down syndrome.

Question- What is Down syndrome?
answer- Down syndrome is a genetic condition. This occurs when an additional chromosome is present in some or all cells of the child. This additional chromosome is usually a copy of the 21st chromosome, also known as Tricomy 21.
In general, every cell of a human has 23 pair (46) chromosomes, but in children with down syndrome, this number is 47. This additional chromosome affects the physical, mental and intellectual development of the child.
Not every child affected by Down syndrome is the same. Some children have very mild symptoms like difficulty speaking or delay in walking. Whereas some children may need more care and treatment due to diseases like learning, speaking, walking or heart, thyroid.

Question- What causes Down syndrome?
answer- The main cause of Down syndrome is an additional chromosome in the cells during conceivance. This is a genetic change, which affects every cell of the body. This condition is often a coincidence completely a coincidence. There is no mistake of parents in this.
However, when the mother is more than 35 years old and the father is more than 40, its risk increases slightly. In most cases this situation becomes automatically. Down syndrome cannot be stopped.
Down syndrome is of three types. The most common in it is pre-triceomy 21, which is seen in about 95% of cases. The second type is translocation. In this, the 21st chromosome is connected to another chromosome. It is found in less than 4% cases. The third and rare type is mosaic. It consists of 47 chromosomes in some cells and 46 chromosomes in some. This occurs in less than 1% of cases.

answer- Dr. Sunita Bijarnia Mahay says that there is no permanent cure for Down syndrome. It is a life -long genetic condition, which develops only when the child’s womb. However, during pregnancy, investigation can be known about time in time. This gives parents a chance to prepare mentally, emotional and medical.
However, by reducing its symptoms, the child can be enacted physically, mentally and socially to some extent. For this, physical, occupational and behavioral therapy can be given so that the muscles strengthen the strength and everyday tasks can be easier.
Apart from this, the child can live a self -sufficient and happy life by treating speech therapy, special education programs and necessary medical problems.
